According to our contract with Arcadia CC, we are only allowed 6 hours per day. I negotiated with them for the additional 3 hours per day for the sectional a rate of $766 per day. It would have been $676 per day for 6 hours. Hope this is ok. We can always cancel with no cost if not but $1500 rental for 2 days with all tables and chairs and use of kitchen feels reasonable. Or go back to having it at Pasadena club.
Any comments?

It is my understanding that ALL MEMBERS of unit 559 should have the opportunity to be represented in the Membership Roster not just those that have email addresses. Have all members been contacted that don't have email addresses either by phone or letter?
Also, I don't believe we voted to exclude our rankings from the roster that has been available for years. Why are they no longer there? Please include this on the agenda for our next board meeting.
Sincerely,
Gloria

I have these three beige old wastebaskets that haven't been reclaimed
since the sectional. I'm planning to toss them in the dumpster this
weekend unless I hear otherwise. :)
Cheers,

Pasadena San Gabriel
The big news this month is the successful presentation of the John Waken
Pasadena Sectional for the first time post-pandemic.
For most of our unit board members, this was the first experience with
putting on a sectional tournament. It turned out to be a great way to
get experience with all the organization and promotion that's involved.
It was really gratifying to see how everyone pitched in to help set up
the rooms, bring in snacks and coffee, and clean up the space by 7:00 PM
on Sunday! Congratulations and thanks to tournament chairs Angela Peters
and Sherry Hansen.
We ended up with a total of 103 tables of bridge played over the
weekend. The top winners were Freddy and Lulu Minter.
The unit managed to cover expenses and then some. This should make us
more confident and ready to hold a sectional in a real venue next year.
Not having split rooms will enable us to have pairs games on Saturday
and team games on Sunday. We're working on getting the Arcadia Community
Center August 9-10 next year.
We held one unit game last month with 12 tables on July 21. Winners N/S
were Jeannette Deverian and Dan Lubesnik. E/W was Amr Elghamry and
Dominique Moore.
Our August 4 game had 11-1/2 tables, and was won by Karen Arase and
Gitta Earll N/S, with Amr and Dominique winning again in E/W.
We'll be holding unit games on most first and third Sundays of each
month for the rest of 2024. The next two are August 18 and September 1.
All of the unit games are held at the Pasadena Bridge Club. Contact
Miriam Harrington at (626) 232-0558 or miratpf(a)aol.com to make
reservations. We serve pizza at 12:00, and the game starts promptly at
12:30. Card fees for the unit games are still only $10, cash only please!
We're planning to hold an *Over/Under game* on Sunday, Sept. 29. This is
a game where newer players will be paired with experienced players. It's
a great opportunity for the new players to get experience playing with
experienced players, and for the experienced players to provide
encouragement for new players to play more fearlessly.
Special congratulations to new Life Masters and Bronze Life Masters
*Karmen Armoudjian* and *Elliott Mazur*. Congratulations to new Silver
Life Master *Teresa Thurman*.

These are notoriously hard to read, but we did quite well.
I'll break it down a little differently so you can see how it all works out.

Good afternoon Mojo,
It was a pleasure to work with you this weekend. You and everyone

Here is your financial report.

What time does the pizza need to be picked up? I could get it right before noon, and have it upstairs by 12:00, if that would help. I can’t get there any earlier than that.

The official director's report makes sense to ACBL accounting, but it's
a jumble of things to make sense of.
I tried doing a restatement of it that matches up with the numbers from
the report.
And it has a nice bottom line. :)
The important thing to note from the original report is that the "MONEY
DUE TO ACBL" is a negative number, which is to say, they will pay the
Unit directly as an EFT.

Tomorrow's club game finishes about 2:15, and at that point the
sectional prep starts.
The housing dept. is closed on Fridays, so we generally have the place
to ourselves.
Things to do:
* Clear out space in the second room
* Set up tables spaced in a careful grid (we'll be measuring)
* Set up supply tables on the sides of the room
* Start the kitchen prep and get all the supplies in there
* In the main room, clearing off the table cloths and bidding boxes
* spacing the tables on an 8-foot grid
* returning the table cloths
* setting up bidding boxes in both rooms
* pencil sharpening
* Bridgemate distribution
For me: Make eight board sets, six for the first session, two for the
second. (I'll make more during lunch for the second session.)
Gloria is bringing signs. I couldn't tell her what we needed exactly,
but now I know it'd be nice to have section signs, i.e., "Section B -->"
down the hall, Sections A and C will be in the main club.
Our director-in-charge will be arriving sometime Friday afternoon, so
we'll be setting up his desk for entry sales, computer, printer (John
are you bringing a printer?), Bridgemate server, etc.
We'll decide how to divvy up the sections and have everything laid out
for Saturday morning.
I'll probably be at the club at 8:30 on Saturday, but if everything
seems ready on Friday night, maybe I'll sleep in an extra half hour. :)
Cheers,
Mojo
