message from Roy

I found this message in the moderation queue for the mailing list. It came from 6263409575(a)vzwpix.com which I presume is Roy Wilson's cell phone. So Roy must have sent it using his SMS text message app. Which Verizon attempted to convert into an email, with the text of the message attached to the email. Since it didn't arrive from a recognized email address, I lost track of it 'til just now. Here's the message: Hi, First, my thanks to all of you who continue to serve on our unit board. And next, as your webmaster, I would like to continue to be included in board communications so I can make any announcements you consider worthy of announcement. Of course, please tell me, too, if something is still too early to announce. I am very happy to help in anyway I can. I know you will be electing officers soon, and that's something I would like to announce, so let me know as soon as you can. I have a suggestion for the new board to consider: Long ago, when we had about 800 members, it was very easy to get 12 players willing to serve on the board, but now we are down to 357 members and every month it drops again. I suggest that the board amend the bylaws and define a full board as eight members, which is the current membership. Further, although the Arcadia Bridge Center has a separate website which I created, Diane seldom asks for any changes. Our new club in Pasadena has its own website and announcements are made there, but if it would help, I would be happy to include announcements on the unit site as well. (Perhaps the best way to do that, Mojo, would be for you to create a page on your club website and then we put a link on the unit page.) March unit games
by Morris Jones 11 Mar '23

11 Mar '23

Yesterday Jan raised the possibility of holding the March 12 Unit Game at the Pasadena Bridge Club. It would be the annual meeting, officer elections, and a pizza party. Having Blaze Pizza downstairs makes it kind of easy to bring in hot fresh pizza. If this is something to be discussed, I need it to be considered quickly. I have to write the unit column for the Bridge News today. Not that many people read that, but it's certainly part of getting the word out. FYI my whole mindset has changed since opening the bridge club. I didn't know how things would turn out. I'd love to host any of the unit games. Correction to be introduction and election of board members. Mojo ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Pasadena San Gabriel *Important location change for the March 12 Unit Game*: This game will include our annual meeting, with the introduction and election of new board members. We also have a bridge game and lunch, and the Pasadena Bridge Club location just above Blaze Pizza makes it easy to offer fresh hot pizza before the game. Make plans to come to the *Pasadena Bridge Club, 649 N Fair Oaks Ave. #201, Pasadena*, for a pizza feast, snacks, and unit championship competition. There's not a lot of signage for the club, but it's easy to find when you know where it is. The club is in the Fair Oaks Renaissance Center, along with Vallarta Supermarket, Blaze Pizza, and a Starbucks coffee. The club is just above Blaze Pizza. Park anywhere in the shopping center, look for the (non-working) clock tower between Vallarta and Blaze, and the door to the club is right there. Elevator access is easy. More is at https://pasadenabridgeclub.com/location/ The March 26 Unit Game will also be a *Sectional Tournament at Clubs game*, with silver points available, and possible big awards joined with other clubs. This game will be at the *Arcadia Bridge Center*, 333 N Santa Anita Ave., Arcadia. *Reservations are required* for all unit games! Please contact Miriam Harrington, (626) 232-0558 or miratpf(a)aol.com. The beginning bridge classes continue to bode well for the future of bridge. I have 5-1/2 tables each in a Bridge Basics 1 class on Thursday mornings, and Bridge Basics 2 - Competitive Bidding on Wednesday evenings. *New course coming up* on Thursday evenings *Defense *starting on March 9. The course runs for eight Thursday evenings from 7-9 p.m., and costs $130, which includes the text book. This is a fascinating and important course that will change the way you look at a bridge hand! Sign up by dropping at email to me at mojo(a)pasadenabridgeclub.com. The February Unit Games were very well attended, with ten tables on Superb Owl Sunday (hoot!) and 12 tables on the 26th. Here are the winners in each direction: Febuary 12: N/S: *Timothy and Eileen Finlay* E/W: *Karen Arase* and *Gitta Earll* February 26: N/S: *Peter Szecsi* and *Amr Elghamry* E/W: *Fredy Minter* and *Lulu Minter* Congratulations this month to new Club Master *Terre Osterkamp*, and new Sectional Master *Ming Hu*. DRAFT: Pasadena San Gabriel bridge news column
by Morris Jones 30 Jan '23

30 Jan '23

Please review for errors and (especially) omissions! ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Pasadena San Gabriel Unit The big news in January was the grand opening of the *Pasadena Bridge Club*. (649 N Fair Oaks Ave. #201) On January 7 we hosted a party and a nine-table game; six tables in the Open Pairs and three tables in a 299er game. Visitors and friends came from all over the county to enjoy the comfortable and attractive new bridge club. The *wall art at the club* is particularly striking. My co-founder and partner Zachary Vedro had a trove of beautiful abstract works by his wife Jessamyn's grandfather. Zachary had the pieces mounted and framed, and they are now on loan to the bridge club. They truly add the finishing touch to an already world-class bridge facility. Games have been slow getting started, but classes at the bridge club are doing very well. Nearly all of the students in my Wednesday evening /Bridge Basics 1/ course are coming back each week, and many have ventured into the Social / Supervised games at the bridge club. Students from last fall's beginning bridge series are playing in the novice games on Monday evening, and the 299er game on Saturday afternoon. To me this *bodes well for the future* of the face-to-face game, and spotlights the real value of *learning and playing bridge* with old and new friends in a comfortable bridge club. For February the Wednesday 11:00 a.m. games will feature *Bridge and Pizza* parties, with open competition, and boards from The Common Game. Come play bridge with lunch from Blaze Pizza! Plenty of easy free parking. A *new series of Bridge Basics* courses will begin on *Thursday mornings* starting February 23 at the Pasadena Bridge Club. Have your non-bridge playing friends drop by the web site to reserve a seat: https://pasadenabridgeclub.com Elsewhere in this issue of the Bridge News you'll see pictures from the District 23 North American Pairs final, held at the new bridge club. It was quite a treat to see the club filled with players from all over Los Angeles County and everything working smoothly. March will bring our annual *elections to the unit board*, which is responsible for the administration of unit games and sectionals in the Pasadena San Gabriel unit. If you feel the urge to give volunteer time back to bridge, this is a splendid way to participate. Please let me or any of our board members know of your interest and availability! The *Pasadena Unit Games* continue twice-monthly at the *Arcadia Bridge Center*. Here are the winners from the January games: * January 8 o N/S: Peter Szecsi - Amr Elghamry o E/W: Nancy Nakanishi - Milton Kalikman * January 22 o N/S: Peter Szecsi - Amr Elghamry o E/W: Arthur Moore - Dominique Moore Our Unit Games have great competition and excellent light lunch snacks provided by the unit. The unit board would love to have additional *volunteers to help bring food and snacks* for the semi-monthly unit games. Drop me a note if you'd like to help out. For February, our unit games will be held on their regular schedule, with game time at *12:30 p.m., *on *Feb. 12 and 26*. Yes, we'll be playing on Super Bowl Sunday, but there will be lots of time to catch the entire game (and commercials!) on your DVR after the bridge game. For unit game reservations please contact Miriam Harrington at (626) 232-0558 or miratpf(a)aol.com. Congratulations to these players moving up in the ranks of the ACBL: New Junior Masters *Terry Nafisi*, *Guerry Collins*, and *John Wolf*. New Club Master *Teri Unsworth*. Special congratulations to our newest Life Master (and Bronze Life Master) *Kathy Cresto*, our long time board member and publicity chair who has contributed so much to our unit. Thank you and congratulations! -- build message Morris "Mojo" Jones mojo(a)PasadenaBridgeClub.com https://PasadenaBridgeClub.com <https://pasadenabridgeclub.com> Pasadena Bridge Club <https://pasadenabridgeclub.com>

HOORAY!!!!! December 10th was available. They need a check for security deposit of $320.00 to accompany the contract within 2 weeks to hold the space. She will send me the contract. Fortunately, Sunday is not as popular as other days. For 2024, should you want to book this again, I believe you can book December 1, 2023. I suggest that be done.
