DRAFT Pasadena San Gabrielt Unit Column
by Morris Jones 28 Mar '23

28 Mar '23

Please review for mistakes and omissions. I really forgot who's on and off the board, so help me out with that. Tom, this will no doubt be revised ... I'm working a bit from memory ... especially on the incoming and outgoing board of directors. Mojo ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Pasadena San Gabriel Morris "Mojo" Jones So much news! A new Unit Board has been elected. Departing the board are Jan Wickersham, Mary Falvey, and Roy Wilson. Joining the board is Angela Peters. Our new board includes President Lisa Walker, Vice-President Richard Halverstadt, Secretary Linda Stuart, and Treasurer Miriam Harrington, plus members Morris Jones, Kathy Cresto, and Michael Rodrigues. At the first meeting of the new board, we made plans to split the monthly Unit Games between the Pasadena Bridge Club and the Arcadia Bridge Center. Unit Game dates will be as follows, with all games starting at 12:30 p.m.: * April 9, Pasadena Bridge Club (yes, Easter) * April 23, Arcadia Bridge Center * May 7, Pasadena Bridge Club * May 21, Arcadia Bridge Center * June 4, Pasadena Bridge Club * June 18, Arcadia Bridge Center The board is discussing not serving lunch at the Unit Games. If you have an opinion one way or the other, please let a board member know! In March our Unit Games were 12 tables on March 12, and 13 tables for the STaC game on March 26. Here are winners North-South and East-West for each game: * March 12 N-S Madhu Sudan - Stan Majcher * March 12 E-W Joel Schiff - Jan Wickersham * March 26 N-S Gregory Tapia - Hanna Zhuang * March 26 E-W Dan Lubesnik - Amr Elghamry As always, for the Unit Games, space is somewhat limited, and reservations are kindly requested! Contact Miriam Harrington to reserve seats, (626) 232-0558, and miratpf(a)aol.com. The Mini-McKenney awards go to unit members accumulating the most masterpoints in 2022. Ace of Clubs is awarded to that player who wins the most in club games (not tournaments). (There were no members in the 7500-10,000 category this year.) The awards in each category go to: Category Mini-McKenney Ace of Clubs >10000 John Jones Lulu Minter 5000-7500 Rae Murbach Rae Murbach 3500-7500 Ernie Wong Ernie Wong 2500-3500 Joan Mesias Joan Mesias 1500-2500 Fredy Minter Fredy Minter 1000-1500 Sandy Rucker Sandy Rucker 500-1000 Paulette Burkitt Paulette Burkitt 300-500 Kim Ebner Kim Ebner 200-300 Elliott Mazur Janelle Morton 100-200 Suzanne Wilcox Mariann Nolan 50-100 Ming Hu Ming Hu 20-50 Nina Huang Nina Huang 5-20 Stuart Soldate Stuart Soldate 0-5 Denise Botsford Denise Botsford There are several bridge courses starting up in April, including a free course on the Precision bidding method by Roy Wilson. He'll be offering the course at the Pasadena Bridge Club on Saturday afternoons at 1:00 starting April 8. Let Roy or Mojo know if you're planning to attend! Other courses include: * Popular Conventions, Wed. 7-9 PM, April 5 * Competitive Bidding, Thu. 9-11 AM, April 6 * Two Over One Game Force, Sat. 9:30-11:30 AM, April 8 To enroll send an email to mojo(a)pasadenabridgeclub.com, or use the form on the website at https://pasadenabridgeclub.com We've had some unfortunate instances of anger and provocation at the bridge table during Unit Games recently, and the unit board will be emphasizing our Zero Tolerance Policy for such actions. It's important to know that there are no warnings, and the tournament director is the sole judge for applying penalties. Finally, I'm saddened to note the sudden and unexpected passing of one of the stalwarts at the bridge table in our unit, Arthur Moore. Arthur was a formidable competitor at the table, and a Sapphire Life Master. I'll miss seeing his name at the top of the leader board for the unit games, and join with everyone in the unit to offer comfort and support to his widow Dominique Moore. In Arthur's honor, the Unit Game on April 23 will be named the Arthur Moore Open Pairs. -- build message Morris "Mojo" Jones mojo(a)PasadenaBridgeClub.com https://PasadenaBridgeClub.com <https://pasadenabridgeclub.com> Pasadena Bridge Club <https://pasadenabridgeclub.com>

More
by Roy Wilson 27 Mar '23

I have not added anything except the ACBL policy, but when the board reaches a decision on how poor conduct will be addressed in our unit games, I would like to add that as well. You might not be aware that Peter Szecsi is our unit recorder, and although his services in that capacity have never been needed, I believe he still serves in that capacity. He might want to be replaced, so perhaps someone should ask him. What does a recorder do? The duties of a recorder should be, but are not, spelled out in our Standing Rules, but as I understand them, he is supposed to be the board contact if a player wants to complain about the conduct of another player, or report a suspicion of cheating. The recorder makes a record of the complaint and if he receives several from different sources, he reports it to the board for further investigation or action. It’s an office that is rarely, if ever, needed! I’ve played bridge more than half my life. The lesser half I wasted.

Hello, board members This evening I added a link to a copy of the ACBL Zero tolerance policy. It’s below the daily nnouncement area in area reserved for board announcements. I appreciate any comments or help you may have. Folks, I truly am in need of an editor and a proofreader. Roy I’ve played bridge more than half my life. The lesser half I wasted.

ACBL Codification: Units
by Morris Jones 24 Mar '23

24 Mar '23

I thought it'd be worthwhile to provide everyone with a copy of the ACBL Codification that covers the organization and operation of Units, and the relationship between a Unit and the ACBL. Here are the relevant pages from the Codification. It's a huge document, but so many details are found there when looking for something organizational related. I do not have a copy of the unit by-laws. (They might be on Roy's web site, I haven't looked yet.) Meeting today 3:30
by Morris Jones 24 Mar '23

24 Mar '23

We managed to drift the meeting time to 3:30, which is okay with me. The main issue is that Miriam can't make the meeting, so we can't get an update on the treasury. The main agenda item is electing officers, but maybe after doing that we should set an agenda for a future meeting to be held shortly after.
