Well here I am in an airport lounge writing a column for the Bridge
News. We're all running behind. I know that my email reflector for
unit559board is out of date, and so is my own memory of what the changes
were. So I'm not catching all of the new board members.
Please review my draft column below, help me out with who left and who
joined the board, and at some point this week I'll also update the email
reflector so the new members are in the list, and old ones taken off.
It's been a weird and crazy month for me.
Lew I need help from the unit board, I'll get this to you as soon as I can.
Best regards,
Mojo
------------------------------------------------------------------------
I happy to see March behind me this year. I spent 10 days at the Reno
NABC -- some of it playing, some of it "working." I gave a talk at the
teacher's breakfast about teaching online, and even took along my
equipment to teach some of my classes from the hotel room.
Bridge wasn't great for me, and I managed to catch COVID. Rather than
bring it home with me, I extended my stay at the Eldorado, and spent
five days not leaving the room and eating drop-off room service. My
symptoms included a day of a mild fever, and a runny nose that's still
dragging on a bit.
Nevertheless, eleven days after testing positive, I'm again testing
negative, and I'm on my way to work a Sectional at Sea on the Regent
Seven Seas Splendor, traveling from Miami to Barcelona. I have the
weirdest luck and timing.
At the March 13 Unit Game we held elections for unit board members. Our
thanks to /(who?) /and /(who?)/ who are departing the board, and welcome
to /(who?)/ and /(who?)/ who have volunteered to serve for the next two
years.
Our officers remain *Jan Wickersham* as President, I'm being relieved as
Vice President by *Lisa Walker*, with Treasurer *Miriam Harrington* and
Secretary *Linda Stuart*.
Winners at the March 13 game were *Peter Szecsi* and *Amr Elghamry* N/S,
*Arthur and Dominique Moore* E/W.
The March 27 game is one I had to miss, not wanting to bring my COVID
infection into the bridge club. We did have two players who tested
positive shortly after playing on March 27.
Winners at the March 27 Royal STaC game were *Patrick Cardulo* and
*Carolyn Cohen* N/S, and *Arthur and Dominique Moore* E/W. I haven't yet
seen updates for STaC-wide awards, but there was certainly a rainbow of
point colors available for that game!
We have unit games scheduled for Sundays at 12:30 on April 10 and April
24. Reservations are required! Contact Miriam Harrington at (626)
232-0558. Don't forget that proof of full vaccination is required, and
honestly I think it'd be a good idea to wear a mask during the game.
Don't go through what I had to go through!
Rank changes for this month: New Club Master *Nina Huang*, and new
Bronze Life Master *Michael Lo*.

I have to open with the passing of one of our most beloved and stalwart
unit members and a fierce competitor at the bridge table, *Sandra
Franciscus*. I don't know the full story of Sandra's history with our
unit, but I know she was a frequent volunteer in its administration. The
games here will not be the same without her.
Our Unit Games every other Sunday (or so) continue to be well attended.
In our first February game, February 13, we had nine full tables (not
bad for Super Bowl Sunday). We had just learned of the passing that
morning of Sandra, and you'll notice in the results that the game was
named the Sandra Franciscus pairs in her honor. Winners N/S were
*Cathryn Martin* and *Diana Borgatti* (69%!) and E/W were *Carolyn
Cohen* and *Patrick Cardullo*.
We have another February game scheduled for Sunday, February 27, and
with our column deadlines coming up, I don't yet know how that game will
turn out. I'll report next month.
For March, our games will be on the same dates, March 13 and 27 at the
Arcadia Bridge Center. With limited space, reservations are required!
Call Miriam Harrington to save your spot, (626) 232-0558. As always
proof of vaccination is required, but if we're lucky, maybe these will
be our first games without a mask requirement for vaccinated players
(which would be everyone).
Unit Game results are posted on both ACBL Live for Clubs
https://my.acbl.org/club-results/905596 and The Common Game https://
<https://thecommongame.com/ClubWebHost/905596/>thecommongame.com/ClubWebHost/905596/.
The club name is "Unit 559" which you can use as a search on Live for Clubs.
This month we have two major milestones to announce in rank advancements.
*Lisa Walker* is now a Life Master and Bronze Life Master. *Morris
Jones* is now a Gold Life Master.
I'd like to tell a story about when I first became a Life Master, living
in Campbell, near San Jose, CA. A friend who was a tournament director
and experienced player, was introducing me to some other friends at a
tournament.
He said, "This is Mojo, he's new to Flight B."
It was a humbling thought and a reminder of how much bridge awaited me
on the journey. I've spent a lot of that time learning to compete in
Flight B.
Now that I'm newly in Flight A, I know that I have to learn to play this
game at another level. I wouldn't have it any other way.
And Lisa -- welcome to Flight B!

Good Morning, Friends,
I just got a call fromLinda Stuart. She is supposed to bring food for Sunday but will not be there. I have come down with a cold and will not be able to be there either. Is there someone else who would be willing to do a last minute? Our budget is $50.00 and pretty easy to fulfill. Please let me know. Mojo, I’ll have to rely on you to be upfront as well as direct. So very much appreciated.
Draft for the monthly unit column in the Southern California Bridge
News. Please review for accuracy and typos! :)
------------------------------------------------------------------------
We had two great unit games in January, with 11-1/2 tables on the 9th,
and 11 tables on the 23rd.
Winners on the 9th include *Fredy Minter* and *Lulu Minter* N/S and
*Stan Kosowski* and *Harish Singh* E/W. On the 23rd it was *Marie
Nimmrich* and *Diane Gulbrandsen* N/S with *Arthur Moore* and *Dominique
Moore* E/W.
We're planning another two unit games in February on the 13th and the
27th. The game on February 13th is also Super Bowl Sunday, but the unit
game will be over about 4:00. That should be the perfect time to get
back home, start up the game on the DVR, skip the commercials, and catch
up to the live finish by the end of the game!
Space is limited for our unit games! Reservations are required. We've
come close to running out of tables on previous Sunday afternoons.
Please contact Miriam Harrington at (626) 232-0558 to reserve a seat.
Remember that proof of vaccination is required, and masks must be
securely in place throughout the game -- noses and mouths covered
please! No thin cloth masks, or masks with ventilators. Send a picture
of your vaccination card to Roy Wilson unit559webmaster(a)gmail.com. I
believe we're close to putting this all behind us, and I don't want to
drag it out!
We've had real difficulty balancing the seeding of our unit games. On
the 23rd we had nine flight A pairs playing N/S, and one playing E/W.
This really makes it difficult to have a fair bridge game. We're going
to have to insist that A pairs who can move from table to table play
E/W, saving the stationary seats for those who truly cannot move without
extreme difficulty.
This is not just a problem at our club, obviously. The most experienced
bridge players are also the ones with the most mobility problems, for
obvious reasons! I know a lot of players like playing N/S for the
convenience, but that can't be an option, for the sake of the game. If
you are requesting a N/S seat, please let Miram know that you are unable
to play E/W. "I don't like to play E/W" is no longer a valid reason.
We have two new Regional Masters, *Susanne Hollis* and Suzanne Wilcox.
Special congratulations to new Life Master (and Bronze Life Master)
*Ramesh Sawhney*. *Madhu Sudan* is a new Silver Life Master. Marking a
major milestone is *Dominique Moore* as a new Diamond Life Master.
Congratulations all!
Mark your calendars for our next unit games, reservations required!:
* February 13, 12:30 p.m., Arcadia Bridge Center
* February 27, 12:30 p.m., Arcadia Bridge Center

Things from last Sunday's Unit Game:
1. Food
I visited Costco and spent a bit over budget ($63) on food, but I
felt like much of it would last for two games:
Food Jan 23
Consumption:
Chicken wraps: 100%
Nutrigrain bars: 50%
Hershey's nuggets: 30%
Mandarin Orange cups: 50%
Trail mix: 90%
So I have lots to bring to the next game. I might just consider
replenishing the trail mix and bringing two chicken wrap boxes. I
don't mind making that Costco visit again.
2. Next game:
February 13 is *Super Bowl Sunday*. Eek!
Kickoff time is 3:30. Our game ends about 4:00 p.m.
I don't have a good feel for bridge attendance up against the Super
Bowl, but it could be affected, especially if the Rams win this weekend.
3. Seeding:
Miriam, we need you to help seed games. :) Patrick seated 9 A-flight
pairs NS and 1 EW. I'm not in a position to get involved in the
seating before the game starts, and by then it's too late to change
anything.
(Best, of course, is to assign flights to tables: 1-B, 2-C, 3-A,
4-B, 5-C, etc. Spacing out the A tables.)
I've been using Open/2000/750 as the strats, and it's pretty close
to thirds.
I'll be drafting the SCBN column for the unit later today, so it'll be
Feb. 13 for the next game, unless we can communicate differently quickly.
Best regards,
Mojo
