Yes. However, this is only a symptom of the prevailing problem which is a lack of training.
How are we defining 'Novice'?
How do you define an 'Over'?
Non Life Masters could have have over 800 points, i.e., Richard Gero.

I agree with Sherry. The novice players will be scared off with a 750 ceiling. There are too many players under that bar that have many years of experience and are not life masters because of shortage of colored masterpoints.

I do agree that the “Under” players should have a maximum of 449 points, as these are the true novice players. My experience with this event in other units was that there was an imbalance with more novice players signing up.
Another question: do experienced players sign up for this event with a requirement of so many points or are they asked by board members to participate.

This means that some of the usual unit game players will be unable to participate in this event because they have achieved some level of expertise and are no longer "novices".
Then, based on the number of Unders who sign up for the game, we, the Board, will identify experienced players (Overs) to pair up with the Unders. This unfortunately excludes unit players who are not Unders or Overs, but it addresses the purpose of the game to be an educational moment for beginning bridge players.
Please let me know what you think. We probably need to start signups for the Under list by June 1st (latest) so that we can ensure that there are enough participants to make this event a success.
Thanks

Tom I have two edits in the column: Adding card fees for the STaC games,
and a tie in the unit game results.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Pasadena San Gabriel
May is going to be a great month for bridge in and around Pasadena!
The *Royal STaC* will be on from May 1 through May 7. All awards will be
paid in 25% black, 25% silver, 25% red, and 25% gold master points.
At the Pasadena Bridge Club, we'll be offering Royal STaC games on
Wednesday through Saturday. Card fees will be $11 rather than $10.
* Wednesday 11:00 AM Open Pairs
* Thursday 12:00 PM 0-750 Pairs
* Friday 11:00 AM 0-750 Pairs *(Special additional game!)*
* Saturday 1:00 PM 0-750 Pairs
Along with these games, the Pasadena Unit Game will be held on *Sunday
May 7* at the Pasadena Bridge Club, and it will be a Royal STaC game.
Game time is *12:30 PM*, and reservations are required with Miriam
Harrington, (626) 232-0558, or miratpf(a)aol.com
New bridge class starting soon at the Pasadena Bridge Club: *Improving
Your Judgment - Opening the Bidding*, on Thursday evenings for six
Thursdays, 7:00-9:00 PM, starting May 4.
Also a new round of *Bridge Basics 1 - Introduction* will start on May
20, Saturday mornings, 9:30-11:30 AM. Registration is through Pasadena
City College (PCC) Extension, or let me know at the bridge club.
At the April 9 Unit Game, I had a student visiting the game to kibitz. I
always welcome students to kibitz, and warn them to try to arrive about
an hour /after /the game starts -- otherwise I may draft them to play in
the game!
My student arrived before game time for this game, and sure enough, with
a half table, I invited her to play with me to fill the half table. She
was a good sport!
We found ourselves in several 3NT contracts that should probably have
been in a suit, and some pass-outs that possibly should have been bid.
Perhaps we were the beneficiaries of a few mistakes by the opposing
pairs as well. Nevertheless, the stars aligned to give us first place
overall in the game. Amy said she was floating home during the drive
back to Santa Monica. :)
Winners in the Unit Games:
April 9:
N/S: *Morris Jones*, *Amy Muscoplat*
E/W: *Adam Barron*, *Stephen Licker*
April 23:
N/S: *Carolyn Cohen*, *Stephen Licker
*TIE with *Michael Marcucci, Miriam Harrington
* E/W: *Robert Shore*, *Mike Savage*
Please reserve your seat for our unit games! Contact Miriam at (626)
232-0558 or miratpf(a)aol.com. Game time is 12:30 PM. For May the Unit
Games will be held as follows:
* May 7, Pasadena Bridge Club (Royal STaC)
* May 21, Arcadia Bridge Center
Congratulations to the following players moving up in the ACBL ranks!
New Club Master *Dana Dewberry*, new Regional Master *Tracee Dezzutti*,
new NABC Master *Prasad Upasani*, new Life Master and Bronze Life Master
Sadika Elewy, and new Bronze Life Master *Robert Verhoef*.
There is a special event this month on Sunday May 14, a full-day bridge
seminar by player, teacher, and author Robert Todd. See the ad elsewhere
in the bridge news for more information.
I hope to see you soon at the bridge table!

Please review for mistakes and omissions. I really forgot who's on and
off the board, so help me out with that.
Tom, this will no doubt be revised ... I'm working a bit from memory ...
especially on the incoming and outgoing board of directors.

So much news!
A new Unit Board has been elected. Departing the board are Jan
Wickersham, Mary Falvey, and Roy Wilson. Joining the board is Angela Peters.
Our new board includes President Lisa Walker, Vice-President Richard
Halverstadt, Secretary Linda Stuart, and Treasurer Miriam Harrington,
plus members Morris Jones, Kathy Cresto, and Michael Rodrigues.
At the first meeting of the new board, we made plans to split the
monthly Unit Games between the Pasadena Bridge Club and the Arcadia
Bridge Center. Unit Game dates will be as follows, with all games
starting at 12:30 p.m.:
* April 9, Pasadena Bridge Club (yes, Easter)
* April 23, Arcadia Bridge Center
* May 7, Pasadena Bridge Club
* May 21, Arcadia Bridge Center
* June 4, Pasadena Bridge Club
* June 18, Arcadia Bridge Center
The board is discussing not serving lunch at the Unit Games. If you have
an opinion one way or the other, please let a board member know!
In March our Unit Games were 12 tables on March 12, and 13 tables for
the STaC game on March 26. Here are winners North-South and East-West
for each game:
* March 12 N-S Madhu Sudan - Stan Majcher
* March 12 E-W Joel Schiff - Jan Wickersham
* March 26 N-S Gregory Tapia - Hanna Zhuang
* March 26 E-W Dan Lubesnik - Amr Elghamry
As always, for the Unit Games, space is somewhat limited, and
reservations are kindly requested! Contact Miriam Harrington to reserve
seats, (626) 232-0558, and miratpf(a)aol.com.
The Mini-McKenney awards go to unit members accumulating the most
masterpoints in 2022. Ace of Clubs is awarded to that player who wins
the most in club games (not tournaments). (There were no members in the
7500-10,000 category this year.) The awards in each category go to:

There are several bridge courses starting up in April, including a free
course on the Precision bidding method by Roy Wilson. He'll be offering
the course at the Pasadena Bridge Club on Saturday afternoons at 1:00
starting April 8. Let Roy or Mojo know if you're planning to attend!
Other courses include:
* Popular Conventions, Wed. 7-9 PM, April 5
* Competitive Bidding, Thu. 9-11 AM, April 6
* Two Over One Game Force, Sat. 9:30-11:30 AM, April 8
To enroll send an email to mojo(a)pasadenabridgeclub.com, or use the form

We've had some unfortunate instances of anger and provocation at the
bridge table during Unit Games recently, and the unit board will be
emphasizing our Zero Tolerance Policy for such actions. It's important
to know that there are no warnings, and the tournament director is the
sole judge for applying penalties.
Finally, I'm saddened to note the sudden and unexpected passing of one
of the stalwarts at the bridge table in our unit, Arthur Moore. Arthur
was a formidable competitor at the table, and a Sapphire Life Master.
I'll miss seeing his name at the top of the leader board for the unit
games, and join with everyone in the unit to offer comfort and support
to his widow Dominique Moore.
In Arthur's honor, the Unit Game on April 23 will be named the Arthur
Moore Open Pairs.

I have not added anything except the ACBL policy, but when the board reaches a decision on how poor conduct will be addressed in our unit games, I would like to add that as well.
You might not be aware that Peter Szecsi is our unit recorder, and although his services in that capacity have never been needed, I believe he still serves in that capacity. He might want to be replaced, so perhaps someone should ask him.
What does a recorder do? The duties of a recorder should be, but are not, spelled out in our Standing Rules, but as I understand them, he is supposed to be the board contact if a player wants to complain about the conduct of another player, or report a suspicion of cheating. The recorder makes a record of the complaint and if he receives several from different sources, he reports it to the board for further investigation or action. It’s an office that is rarely, if ever, needed!
I’ve played bridge more than half my life. The lesser half I wasted.
