Good morning Board,
As I sat down to prepare an agenda for Monday’s meeting, I realized that we don’t really have anything major to discuss at a Board meeting. The Over/Under game flyers are out, the By Laws are still waiting for us to come up with how to define a quorum, and I have not had a chance with Richard to review the Standing Rules, but that is not urgent.
Unless someone has something urgent to discuss, I suggest we cancel Monday’s meeting and look to the next month.

Pasadena San Gabriel Unit
Morris "Mojo" Jones
New students are clamoring to learn to play bridge! The PCC Extension
"Bridge Introduction" class, held at the Pasadena Bridge Club, started
May 20 and drew 28 students! That class will be continuing on Saturday
mornings through June. Shortly after the Long Beach Regional, I'll be
offering a class for 2/1 Game Force on Thursday evenings. Play of the
Hand is continuing on Wednesday evenings, and will be followed by
Defense. Lots of opportunities to level-up your bridge game!
For the June Unit Games, we'll be holding one Sunday June 4 at the
Pasadena Bridge Club, and one June 18 at the Arcadia Bridge Center. Game
times are 12:30 PM, and reservations are required! Contact Miriam

In July, we won't hold a unit game early in the month, instead we'll be
joining everyone at the Bridge Week Regional in Long Beach. Looking
forward to seeing you all there!
On Sunday, July 23, we'll be holding a special game at the Arcadia
Bridge Center where newer players get to play with a more experienced
partner. We call it the Over/Under game. Generally speaking, the "Under"
players have fewer than 300 masterpoints, and the "Over" players have
more. (Think of it as Life Masters paired with non-Life Masters, but it
may not be exactly that).
I'm taking signups now for the Under players for July 23: drop an email
to mojo(a)pasadenabridgeclub.com and let me know you'd like to play!
It's important to note that partnership assignments for the Over/Under
Game will not be made until the day of the event, and partnerships will
ONLY be assigned through a random draw. No pre-arranged partnerships
will be admitted.

Also, to add to the agenda, Elliot Mazur has asked if he brings food to a unit game, would he be reimbursed? We already pay both Diane and MoJo $40 per game for food, but he wanted more. I told him it was a board decision so we can discuss this tonight as well.

I will be sending out an agenda on Friday for our meeting on Monday at 7 PM. I anticipate it will be short but want to confirm procedures for Over/Under game, have a look at the revised By-l;aws and name the dates for Unit games in August, September and October.

May is going to be a great month for bridge in and around Pasadena!
The *Royal STaC* will be on from May 1 through May 7. All awards will be
paid in 25% black, 25% silver, 25% red, and 25% gold master points.
At the Pasadena Bridge Club, we'll be offering Royal STaC games on
Wednesday through Saturday.

Your Judgment - Opening the Bidding*, on Thursday evenings for six
Thursdays, 7:00-9:00 PM, starting May 4.
Also a new round of *Bridge Basics 1 - Introduction* will start on May
20, Saturday mornings, 9:30-11:30 AM. Registration is through Pasadena
City College (PCC) Extension, or let me know at the bridge club.
At the April 9 Unit Game, I had a student visiting the game to kibitz. I
always welcome students to kibitz, and warn them to try to arrive about
an hour /after /the game starts -- otherwise I may draft them to play in
the game!
My student arrived before game time for this game, and sure enough, with
a half table, I invited her to play with me to fill the half table. She
was a good sport!
We found ourselves in several 3NT contracts that should probably have
been in a suit, and some pass-outs that possibly should have been bid.
Perhaps we were the beneficiaries of a few mistakes by the opposing
pairs as well. Nevertheless, the stars aligned to give us first place
overall in the game. Amy said she was floating home during the drive
back to Santa Monica. :)

And the lack of training can now be addressed very easily with Mojo’s array of classes he is offering in his club. He is an excellent teacher and is teaching a variety of classes for beginners and experienced players alike. I don’t know what else we could do to encourage training. Roy just gave a workshop on Precision for those who were interested for free. So there are resources out there for players.
