Attached is a drastic update of the Over/Under game I presented at our last Unit Board
meeting. Upon further consideration, I decided that the purpose of this event is to have
experienced players teach novice players. That being the case, I revised the process to
identify true novice players (Unders) who are interested in pairing up with an experienced
player so they could learn bridge principles. This means that some of the usual unit game
players will be unable to participate in this event because they have achieved some level
of expertise and are no longer "novices".
Then, based on the number of Unders who sign up for the game, we, the Board, will identify
experienced players (Overs) to pair up with the Unders. This unfortunately excludes unit
players who are not Unders or Overs, but it addresses the purpose of the game to be an
educational moment for beginning bridge players.
Please let me know what you think. We probably need to start signups for the Under list by
June 1st (latest) so that we can ensure that there are enough participants to make this
event a success.

I assume an over is a player over 750 master points?
I think this ceiling is counter productive as the target should be far less. The emphasis
should be on the newer players and the players that have not moved on since taking
beginning lessons several years ago and are seeking ways to move on.
We should encourage them to move on past the beginning level. There are so many players
at the Arcadia Bridge Center like this.
BTW, The Club in Glendora is La Fetra.

I do agree that the “Under” players should have a maximum of 449 points, as
these are the true novice players. My experience with this event in other
units was that there was an imbalance with more novice players signing up.
Another question: do experienced players sign up for this event with a
requirement of so many points or are they asked by board members to
participate.

499 is a good cut off for me. there has to be some delineation. And non-life master.

candidates and ask them to participate after we know how many are needed. That way we
would be comforted knowing that we are selecting qualified Overs. (I could be wrong here —
ideas?)
As for ceiling for Unders, I think I’m hearing a lower limit than 750. Does 499 sound
reasonable?

Hi,
Although I am no longer a board member, I would like to add my comment…
I believe that 750 is too high to qualify as a novice, as is anyone who has
earned the title of Life Master.
On the other hand, I do not think that all Life Masters would qualify as
good teachers, either. Friends, you have a can of worms if you label a
player based on Master Points, but I cannot offer an alternative, either.
Perhaps let the player decide which category he belongs in? Dunno.
