I have an amazing location for a full-time bridge club in the heart of
Pasadena.
Beautiful chairs and tables are on the way. Plumbing is going in, walls
are being painted, carpeting is going down. Two end tables will be at
every card table. Table covers will be green felt.
The south wall has enormous windows with a beautiful view of Mt. Wilson.
There's loads of free parking. There's a separate room with a door for
classes or small games with room for five or six tables.
Downstairs are Blaze Pizza, Subway, Tastee Donuts and Burgers, Vallarta
Market, and a Starbucks.
The web site <https://pasadenabridgeclub.com> is live now. Give it a
look! Peruse the available courses and games that will be coming.

Beginning Bridge /in person/!
I think it's time to get back into the bridge club and class rooms and
kitchen tables and offer beginning bridge again. As fun as it is to play
bridge online, I think the only way to truly grow the game is through
classes and games offered in person.
When better than September? Pass this along to your curious friends!
These classes are intended for people who have never before played
bridge, but they're also a great way to refresh the fundamentals for
those who might have played a little and set it aside.
I have two classes to choose from:
Saturday mornings
* Arcadia Bridge Center, 333 N. Santa Anita Ave., Arcadia
* 9:30 a.m. - 11:30 a.m.
* Six classes, first class September 10
* First class free, try bridge for yourself!
* $70 for all six classes, including text book
* /Reply to this email/ to reserve your seat
Wednesday evenings
* Arcadia High School, administered by PCC Extension
* 7:00 p.m. - 9:00 p.m.
* Six classes, first class September 14
* Class fee $75, plus $12 materials fee (for text book) payable in class
* Click here to register

with PCC Extension or call (626) 585-7608
More information about these classes here at bridgemojo.com

Popular conventions
In the PCC Extension catalog I also have /Bridge Basics - Popular
Conventions/ available for sign ups.
This five-week course will cover the most popular and useful conventions
for new bridge players: Stayman, Jacoby Transfer Bids, strong opening
bids, and slam bidding.
Of course, it wouldn't be an Audrey Grant course without plenty of tips
for declarer play and defense as well!
* Arcadia High School, administered by PCC Extension
* 7:00 p.m. - 9:00 p.m.
* Five classes, first class October 26
* Class fee $69, plus $12 materials fee (for text book) payable in class

I'm looking for a bridge club
Many of you might recall that in March 2020 I was on the verge of
building a *full-time* bridge club in Pasadena. You certainly know how
that turned out!
I'm ready to try again. I have a partner and lots of people who are
clamoring for this. The Pasadena Bridge Club needs to come to life.
We're currently in a search for commercial space where we would be
welcome (2,500-3,500 sq. ft. or so) within Pasadena. I'd love to be in
Old Town or the Playhouse District, but will consider almost anywhere
attractive.
My intention is to build a /destination bridge club/. My target isn't so
much to serve the existing bridge players, but to have a space that will
be attractive to people who don't yet play the game. It should be a
comfortable location where people want to spend time together, with
beginner and intermediate classes offered continuously.
It may not even be just bridge. Think chess, mahjong, canasta, .... (And
the existing bridge players are bound to come play, too!)
*If you have a lead* on space that might be available, please let me know!
Please let me know <https://bridgemojo.com/contact> if you're no longer
interested in bridge class news from me! I'll update my mailing list.

Online Bridge Classes
It's been a busy first third of the year for me! We're planning to stay
home for a while, and I have some evenings to offer some bridge classes
for advancing students.
These classes are starting right away, and space is limited! These
classes are timed for working adults on Pacific Time, but of course
anyone is welcome. Feel free to pass this note along to your favorite
partners and friends.
The full information is on my web site at this link:
https://bridgemojo.com/online-classes-may-2022 and you can register just
by replying to this email. :)
Competitive Bidding
This course is especially valuable if you're playing duplicate bridge in
the clubs or online. Here you'll acquire tools for competing in the
auction when the opponents have opened the bidding. Remember — the
object of the game is to get the best score, not make contracts!
Monday evenings, 6:30 p.m., starting May 9. Six sessions total. $110.00
not including required text.
Defense
This is a dynamite 8-session class that introduces standard defense
techniques used by expert bridge players. I truly believe that /online
/is the best way to experience this course. The tools we have available
make it much easier to visualize all of the hands.
Tuesday evenings, 6:30 p.m., starting May 10. Eight sessions total. $140
not including textbook.

Great online bridge classes!
It's a busy season for me! I'm about to start two sessions of BridgeWhiz
with about 40 kids ages 12-18 in each one. The program is primed to be a
huge success, with about 2,000 kids enrolled across the country. I'm one
of fifty teachers and assistants taking classes of kids. We'll see how
it goes!
Meanwhile I have some great courses starting in November for players
looking to improve their game -- a little bidding and a little defense:
Defense
Let's get better at defeating contracts! The online bridge platforms are
so great at learning to visualize card layouts and combinations. This is
a great opportunity to improve your defender play. Bring your favorite
partner!
Class will be held on Monday evenings, 6:30 p.m. for eight Monday
evenings, starting November 1.
Full details are available at this link
<https://bridgemojo.com/online-classes-nov-2021>, including a link to
register for the class.
Improving Your Judgment - Doubles
How about six Tuesday evenings of practice with doubles! You'll learn
the best practices for advancing your partner's double, rebids for the
doubler, and when to use doubles in some situations you might not have
considered before.
Tuesday evenings at 6:30 for eight Tuesdays, starting November 2.
Full details are available at this link
<https://bridgemojo.com/online-classes-nov-2021#iyjdoubles>, including a
link to register for the class.
Full details at bridgemojo.com
I have lots more detail for each of the three classes at

New /Double Dummy/ movie
The bridge documentary /Double Dummy/ has been re-cutinto a tight and
gripping story about the American youth team competing for gold medals
in China.
We have a wonderful opportunity to see the virtual premiere of the new
Double Dummy starting September 29 free for 48 hours. Here's a link to
catch the premiere <https://watch.showandtell.film/watch/acbl-free>.
The movie will continue to be available after October 1st as a fund
raiser for the ACBL Educational Foundation.

ACBL Intro to Bridge
The ACBL has developed a beginning bridge program to introduce new
players to the game. The course was developed with Hall of Fame teacher
and Grand Life Master Patty Tucker from Atlanta.
The one thing missing from the new program was a course schedule
friendly to West Coast students.
I've been drafted to teach the course on *Wednesday evenings at 6:30
p.m.* starting October 6.
If you have friends who've thought about learning to play our fabulous
game, let them know about the program! Here's a link with all the
information <https://acbl.org/portfolio/intro-to-bridge/> and how to
register for the course.
Bridge for Kids
ACBL Educational Foundation working with Seattle's excellent Bridge for
Youth program is taking their online bridge program for kids national
with BridgeWhiz. They have around 1,500 kids enrolled already in this
free program!
I'm working with the team as Coach Mojo, and hoping to get started with
my own group this October. This might be my most challenging teaching
engagement so far!
If you know a kid who might want to give bridge a try, here's the link
with information
<https://www.acbleducationalfoundation.org/page/bridgewhiz-online-bridge-les…>
and a registration form. This is for kids in grade 4-12, and it's a
20-week free online program.

Virtual Bridge Games
Since teaming up with Paula Olivares, our virtual bridge club continues
to offer great games on Bridge Base Online (BBO). Paula has been
managing the Unit 556 + PPD <https://bridgemojo.com/unit556> club since
June. I'll be returning to give her a break from managing the club for
the last quarter of 2021.
For newer players, there's theAll Western 99er Nite Club
<https://www.bridgewebs.com/desertcities/99er%20NiteClub%200-20%20flyer.pdf>
(PDF) with games Monday through Thursday at 6:30 p.m. Pacific time.
These quick 12 board games are followed by a Zoom meeting to go over
hands with great teachers from up and down the West Coast.
I'll be jumping in to direct and run the postmortem on occasional
Thursday evenings.
Grab your favorite partner and play some bridge!

Online bridge courses
As promised, I've put together a slate of three online bridge courses
for September and October.
Learning online can seriously advance your skills — often more
effectively than in-person classes. With the tools I have at hand, you
are better able to visualize and take advantage of card play and positions.
If you're thinking about getting back into the game, or want to build on
your understanding of Standard American bidding, try the Bridge Basics
Refresh course!
If you're playing duplicate games in the club or online, the tools in
the Competitive Bidding course can seriously improve your results.
If you've been playing Standard American for a while, think about taking
the next step. 2 over 1 Game Force is the bidding system based on 5-card
majors that's most popular with experienced players.
Bridge Basics Refresh
Let's back up to the basics of the constructive auction using the
/Standard American 5-card Major /bidding system. We'll cover notrump,
major suit, and minor suit openings and responses, and we'll revisit the
Stayman and Jacoby Transfer Bid conventions.
Monday evenings, 6:30 p.m., starting September 13.
Competitive Bidding
This course is especially valuable if you're playing duplicate bridge in
the clubs or online. Here you'll acquire tools for competing in the
auction when the opponents have opened the bidding. Remember — the
object of the game is to get the best score, not make contracts!
Tuesday evenings, 6:30 p.m., starting September 14.
2 over 1 Game Force
2/1GF is the most popular and successful bidding system used by
experienced players in clubs and tournament play. By making one small
tweak to your familiar 5-card major system, you will gain an advantage
in finding slams and your best game contracts.
Sunday afternoons, 4:00 p.m., starting September 19.

In-person and online bridge
It's been a weird up-and-down year, but I have my first in-person bridge
classes on the calendar, and possibly four cruises in 2022.
I'm also putting together a schedule for online classes both for
beginners and advancing players. Let me know
<https://bridgemojo.com/contact> what you'd like to attend!
And there's some cool personal news at the bottom. :)
Panama Canal cruise from San Diego
I'm planning to join Karol and Guy Monroe for a luxury cruise from San
Diego to Miami, through the Panama Canal, for 16 nights (!) departing
January 19, 2022. The bridge program has a Sectional Tournament
sanction, with great bridge games and lessons on sea days.
This is a great way to get away, enjoy some focused bridge time, and
earn some *silver points* toward your Life Master award! I'll be there
directing games and helping out with bridge classes.

Learn to play bridge in person
On Wednesday evenings starting September 15, I'll be offering *Bridge -
Introduction*, through PCC Extension. Classes will meet at Arcadia High
School.
Back-to-back with BB1, I'll offer *Bridge - Popular Conventions*, on the
same schedule, starting October 20.
Read all about the courses on my web site: Fall 2021 Learn to play
in-person <https://bridgemojo.com/node/73>.
Add to your bridge skills online
I have lots of time slots to add additional online classes, using all
the great tech I have available for teaching bridge. Drop me a note and
let me know what classes would interest you!
Here are some suggested classes that I could schedule:
* 2 over 1 Game Forcing
* Improving Your Judgment - Doubles
* Improving Your Judgment - Opening the Bidding
* Competitive Bidding
* Play of the Hand
* Defense
I'll send another note in the next few weeks with information about
continuing bridge classes and events for this fall. (Unit 556 is working
with me for an ongoing bridge class for their members.)
Congratulations to me
This month I interviewed for the prestigious *Master Teacher*
designation awarded by the American Bridge Teachers Association

I've also agreed to join their officers as Recording Secretary.

Bridge events starting this week
I'm planning to wrap up online bridge classes for this season with a
class *starting tomorrow* on *Play of the Hand* for eight weeks. I still
have a few seats available for that class — if you're interested let me
know quickly! (If you'd like to join mid-series, you're welcome as well.
Drop me a note.)
I'm also inviting everyone to a free social duplicate bridge game on
Tuesday, March 23. We'll hold games on the following four Tuesdays as
well, for $9/game or $30 for all four.
Free Social Bridge Game this Tuesday Evening
I'm offering five relaxed bridge games on Tuesday evenings, 7:00-9:15,
using the remarkable RealBridge <https://realbridge.online/> platform
from the UK. Here we play with full audio and video of our table mates.
It's the closest thing that I've seen to a real bridge game at home with
friends!
Our expected players are all newer players and students from my classes
this year. You should see lots of familiar faces. This is not
specifically a /supervised play/ game, but I hope to have one or two
experienced players who can help with bridge decisions. (/If that would
be you, drop me a note!/)
*Since RealBridge is an unfamiliar platform, I want to give everyone an
opportunity to try it out free on the first Tuesday evening.
Reservations are still required, so drop me a note if you'd like to join
the game!*
After each game, we'll gather on Zoom to discuss bidding and play. We
can compare with the other tables in the game, and I'll offer my
perspective on many of the hands. The deals will be random shuffles, so
even I don't know what to expect!
* Five Tuesday evenings, Check in at 7:00 , game running 7:15 - 9:15,
March 23 - April 20.
* First game free! $9 for a single session, $30 for the remaining four
* No director, no masterpoints, no pressure!

Play of the Hand starts Sunday
This is an online, interactive course using Zoom and a virtual bridge
table from Shark Bridge. The target audience is brand new bridge
players, but even players with significant experience will find valuable
tools for their declarer play.
* Eight Sunday afternoons, March 21 through May 9, 3:00 - 4:30 p.m.
* $150 for the full eight week course ($25 individual lessons)

Competitive bidding
I believe the Competitive Bidding class from Audrey Grant offers the
most powerful set of tools available for advancing club and tournament
bridge players.
I'm offering this class through PCC Extension on Tuesday evenings
starting on April 27.
Space in this class is limited and I expect it to fill quickly! Register
through PCC Extension at this link.

Newcomer games and weekly mini lesson
We're still busy playing and teaching bridge online. It's going to be a
while before most of the face-to-face bridge clubs and tournaments open
again. (I'm eager for that myself!)
In the meantime, take advantage of my weekly Saturday morning bridge
mini lessons. I cover a single topic in 15 minutes.
You can join in person on Zoom
<https://us02web.zoom.us/j/83912578991?pwd=Y1R2UnJ1TFM2dVZzYmsyTDdzeFcydz09>,
or have a look at previous topics on my YouTube channel playlist
<https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLD5qT1hFf-OreW5_zBRHB3WwF6Ljdp-OS>.
We also have games for newer bridge players every Wednesday evening and
Saturday afternoon. If you'd like to join the game, contact me or join
our notification email list
<https://mailman.bridgemojo.com/postorius/lists/newcomers.bridgemojo.com/>.
I'll send a note before every game.
What would you like for your next class?
I have a regular series of classes happening on Sunday afternoons at
3:00. Right now it's /Improving Your Judgement - Opening the Bidding/.
What would you like me to offer next?
Fill in the survey here and help me decide!
