Board Election

Dear Board and Board to be— It is now 20 days before the Election Party and we have a full slate of candidates for the 7 available positions on the Board. I am so grateful to each of you for stepping up to serve our Unit. Those standing for election are: Don Garner Patricia Luehrs Gloria Rommel Liza Billington Doug Senor Morris Jones Michael Rodriques The 5 continuing on are: Lisa Walker Miriam Harrington Angela Peters Sherry Hansen Kathy Cresto The terms are two years each. Because we have 7 people running for 7 positions, we do not need to hold an election. We can accept each of you onto the Board by acclamation. Our first Board meeting of the new Board will be on Monday March 4, 2024 at 7 PM on Zoom. You will be sent a Zoom link that day to join in. At that meeting, we will do organizational business such as assigning officers and committee chairs. I will be sending you a copy of the By Laws and Standing Rules for a better explanation of what those are. Again, thank you all for offering to serve our Unit and bridge, especially in these difficult times. Election Party

Good morning Board, Our election ballot is set and it looks like, barring any unforeseen movements, we do not need to have an election. We have 7 people running for 7 spots. The are as follows: Morris Jones Michael Rodriques Donald Garner Doug Senor Patricia Leahrs Gloria Rommel Liza Billngton Five of us are returning: Lisa Walker Angela Peters Sherry Hansen Miriam Harrington Kathy Cresto So we will have a full contingent of Board members for the next year. Yeah!! We do need to have an election to approve the amended By Laws so those ballots will be passed out at the Election Party on March 3rd. Hopefully Richard will be there to tabulate them as the head of the Nominating Committee. I would still like to have the Election Party free to our players, that means everyone that comes. We can limit it to ____??? tables and require reservations. I think it’s a nice thing to do for our members and we have plenty of cash in the bank, as well as a Sectional coming up in July which hopefully we will make extra funds from. I don’t think should say that only Unit 559 members are free. Let’s just have a nice game with food and drink and free plays. I figure it will cost us about $600 all told with the food, drink, sanction fee, club rental and director fee. But of course this is up to the whole board. We will not have a meeting beforehand, so please sound in on your thoughts in the next 5 days so Kathy can publicize this for us. Also, Mariam, do you think my calculation is correct about cost? DRAFT Unit 559 Bridge News Column

Another last minute submission -- sorry! Please review for corrections and omissions ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Pasadena San Gabriel Unit There are some great events coming up in February to celebrate Chinese New Year. The Pasadena Bridge Club is having *club championship games* all week Tuesday through Saturday, February 6-10. That includes the open games on Wednesday and Thursday at 11:00, and the Novice/Intermediate games on Tuesday evening and Saturday afternoon. Card fees are the same $10, but masterpoints will be about triple the usual amount -- the same as a Unit Championship. We're also putting on a full Chinese New Year's party on *Wednesday, February 7*! Margie Lee and friends will be decorating the club, and bringing in lunch. It should be a great time! Make your reservations early -- the club will be limited to 15 tables at most for the party and game. Game time is 11:00 AM, and we'll take a little extra time to party and enjoy lunch. January's unit games were well attended, with 10-1/2 tables on January 7, and 12 tables on January 21. Winners in each direction: January 7: * N/S: Karen Arase, Gitta Earll * E/W: George Wang, Frank Shih January 21: * N/S: Connie Kang, Greg Tapia * E/W: Amr Elghamry, Dominique Moore February's Unit Games will be on Sunday, February 4, at the Pasadena Bridge Club, and Sunday, February 18, at the Arcadia Bridge Center. Election Party

Good morning, Board, We are going to actually have an election at our election party and I was thinking that to encourage more people to come, we might offer free plays to everyone that day. We have the money and it would be nice to have a free play day and food . This is just a thought and I look forward to your thoughts. I am on a plane this morning and out of town for two weeks but would like to hear your thoughts on this. Lisa

Dear Board, I am sorry to send this out to you, but I am unsure how to deal definitively with this problem. At our last Board meeting, Kathy Cresto volunteered for and was made the new Membership Chairperson. I was grateful to Kathy for taking over the postion when Marie resigned, and Kathy leapt into it as she does, putting together descriptions of her job and the Ambassador positions. The next day I received another email from Marie saying that she had reconsidered and would like to have the job back. I explained that Kathy had taken it over and suggested she speak with her but that I had no issues with that happening. During the call, I mentioned that we did not have a Secretary and Marie said she would rather serve in that capacity and she is now running for the Board in the hopes of taking over the Secretary role. All good so far. Then the chaos started, and it has been chaos. Gloria Rommel, one of the two Ambassadors, has taken great offense to (1) Kathy being named Membership Chair, and (2) to some of the changes that Kathy is making to the Ambassador position, mainly that instead of Gloria being “Head” Ambassador and doling out the assignments to new members, Kathy would randomly alternate between the 2 Ambassadors. She emailed me and I told her I had spoken at length with Kathy and had agreed to let her try out her new plan. Gloria has been abusive, argumentative, sending me more than one lengthy email about why this should not happen, even when I told her to respectfully let it go and try it this way. She will not let it go. I finally told her that I was done and not to email me or contact me in any way. She has now contacted Sherry to get her on her side, as if this were a war instead of the minor issue that it is. And now Gloria is running for the Board. I am quite unwilling to serve on a Board with someone who is unable to compromise on anything or to let something go, and who has personal vendettas against anyone, and who is a very difficult person. This should not be stressful and there should not be this much animosity on our Board. It is creating a terrible environment for Kathy and for me. I thought you all should know this directly from me.
