Pasadena San Gabriel Unit
July was busy for me! Besides the Bridge Week Regional in Long Beach, I
spent nine days in Chicago at the convention for the American Bridge
Teachers Association, and five nice days of bridge play at the North
American Bridge Championships.
Back at home, we revived the unit Over/Under game after an absence of
quite a while. The game is now the Peter Szecsi Memorial Over/Under
game, and we had twenty pairs of veteran players with rookie partners. I
was pleased to see that everyone seemed able to share the joy of the
game with all its foibles.
Winners N/S were *Julianne Curry* with *Dennis Semain*. Winners E/W and
first overall were *Nava Grutman* with *Robert Shore*.
Special thanks to Richard Halverstadt and Kathy Cresto who coordinated
the event, produced fliers and publicity, and invited veterans to play.
They made it easy to run a smooth game and provide a good experience for
our players.
Unit Games in August will be held on Sunday, August 6, at the Pasadena
Bridge Club, and August 20, at the Arcadia Bridge Center. For both
games, doors open at 12:00 noon, and game starts at 12:30 PM.
Reservations are required! Contact Miriam Harrington for reservations:

*Bridge Basics I - Introduction* will start again at the Pasadena Bridge
Club, this time on Thursday evenings at 7:00 PM. The first of six
classes meets on August 31. Visit

and other courses coming up.
Congratulations to our unit members moving up in the ACBL player ranks!

I'm adding a paragraph at the bottom of the article:
And finally, we announce Ernie Wong's advance to Diamond Life Master
just before passing away this month. Ernie was a stalwart supporter
of the Downey club, and I know he was Lulu Minter's favorite partner
on BBO.

It's a beautiful day but it is hard to notice the sunshine after the sad
news we received today. Our long-time friend, fellow bridge player and
all-around good person, Ernie Wong, passed away over the weekend. We
are all saddened at this news but not too surprised. The last time he
played at Downey (and provided us with a delicious lunch), we were
somewhat shocked at his fragile appearance. We are so happy he was able
to play with us one final time at our little club.
Ernie was a good friend to the Downey Whittier BC and he was especially
fond of Marcie. He hosted many lovely luncheons for our club and was a
faithful supporter as a player for several years. We send our
condolences to his many friends in the area and throughout the bridge
world. We are not aware of any plans for memorial services but will let
you know if we hear any details. He will be missed by many.
We hope you are making your plans now to join us for bridge on
Wednesday, July 26, at Emanuel Lutheran Church, 150 North Palm, La
Habra, start time is 10:00 am. Please call, text or email if you have
questions or comments.

Hi,
My announcements on the unit website are certainly not official, but I received the information about Ernie's passing from his long-time partner, Frank Shih. Same with Linda Carter. She had a sudden and unexpected stroke.

I thought I heard that as well, but I don't know where to find out.
Tom I may need to add a paragraph to the top.

Hi, friends,
I don’t know how many players registered for our Over Under game, but after the game I would like to recognize the players on the unit website, and congratulate everyone for playing. I also have a suggestion for future games.
Several players have asked me if they could play in the game without being part of the Over/Under game, and I had to tell them no, but it made wonder, "Why not?"
I am suggesting that next year we not exclude anyone from the game, but that we score the game with two flights.
The first flight would be an open one where players’ scores are compared with all the players in the game.
The second flight would be for our Over-Under players and their scores would only be compared to others in the same flight. This would be a single game, but, with separate scores and rankings. We would have two first place winners, etc.
I think if the board adopts this idea, it could be used in several games a year instead of just an annual event. And…. If it’s successful and popular, it could be done every month.
