will reopen for sanctioned, duplicate play. Please read this entire
email!!*
*Games Tuesdays at Noon* - At this time we will have games on Tuesdays at
noon. On July 6, we will evaluate whether there is sufficient interest to
hold Thursday games too.
*Do not bring food and beverages at this time* - The center is not allowing
food or beverages at this time while they await guidance from the LA County
Health Department. The exception is each individual may bring a bottle or
thermos of water. * Canned drinks are not allowed. * No drinking cups will
be provided. Please do not bring any food or snacks. *It is essential
that we comply with these requirements so that the senior center will allow
and support our bridge games after the restrictions are lifted. *
*Card fees- *Initially fees will be $3.00. A $1.00 discount per person
will be awarded for pairs who reserve *by email *by 6:00 p.m. the night
before the game. Please send an email to "GlendaleDuplicateBridge(a)gmail.com"
to reserve.
*Partnerships*- Adam will try to find a partner for you if you email and

play in all games he directs and will not routinely give up his game to
accommodate a player.
*ARC membership*- all players must renew or join the senior center the
first time they play at the club. The good news: If you were a member of
the ARC when the facility closed you will be allowed to rejoin for *no fee*.
Forms for all players will be completed before play.
*Masking*- per policy of the senior center masks are optional for players
who are fully vaccinated. *For the safety of all players, our club will not
allow non-vaccinated players at this time.* Please be sure to not attend *if
you have any symptoms of a cold, flu, or any illness *and call Adam at
(818) 869-4386 as soon as possible.
Please give us your feedback. Will you plan to play on Tuesdays or
Thursdays at this time?
YOUR PRESENCE WILL BE GREATLY APPRECIATED. We realize that the above
restrictions are not optimal for enjoying a game of bridge. *However, your
presence will help us establish our schedule and begin rebuilding.* If you
have any questions you may contact us by phone at (818) 869-4386 or email
at "GlendaleDuplicateBridge(a)gmail.com".
*Finally remember parking,* with validation, parking will cost about $3 in
the adjacent pay lots. Park anywhere else at your own risk.
Very sincerely yours, with gratitude,
Adam and Steve (Licker)
Dear members of the Glendale Bridge Community,
I am sorry to inform you of the passing of Gerry Belcher, our longtime
player and friend.
I will miss Gerry greatly. He inspired me with his warmth, humor and
intelligence. With his attention to detail, he was usually the one who
caught any director's or game errors. Confronting me with these, he was
stern by necessity, tempered with patience for my inevitable repeat
mistakes. He guided me but never shamed me, for which I am very
appreciative.
What follows are the moving memories of his daughter, Elizabeth:
After 83 years, my father passed away on Wednesday. If you knew him, you
knew he was a force - stubborn, loving, smart. The things he was and what
he meant to us can’t be boiled down into one post. But I have to highlight
some things that stand out in my mind right now:
- no way you could keep away him from any USC football game. He had season
tickets for decades. And once retired, he and my mom traveled to every.
single. game.
- dessert fanatic: dark chocolate. His mom’s cheesecake. Pie n’ Burger’s
boysenberry pie. Just some of his favorites.
- he loved Chuck Berry (maybe more 50s rock-n-roll, but I remember it
specifically as Chuck Berry). As a 4-ish-year-old kid, I remember him
standing me up on the two-level cat scratcher, putting on Chuck Berry and
“teaching” me to dance. We got to dance together to Chuck Berry’s Sweet
Little Sixteen at my wedding.
- as my mom would put it, he was born with “itchy feet”. He loved to travel
- and did so extensively. He shared this love with her, with me and with
Kris.
- avid bridge player (something I never understood and never plan to get
into, but he loved it!)
- voracious reader - constantly reading. The newspaper, magazines, and all
the books. He also had a memory like a steel trap. I’ve never understood
how he could hold on to so much information (especially historical facts -
my mind does not work in the same way when it comes to history at all!)
- Magic Mountain enthusiast. He loved roller coasters. We had season passes
as a kid and he would take my Girl Scout troop on our end-of-year trip. His
requirement was riding Colossus twice before moving on to any other rides.
- (not to get political, but I just always found this so delightful) he got
more liberal as he got older. Once he told off a conservative caller trying
to raise money for a particular cause and recapped it for me afterwards. I
was so proud!
- animal lover. He demonstrated this in many ways (including pointing out
every squirrel/bird/cat that went by) but my favorite way was the period
where he captured the feral cats in his neighborhood, found homes for them
if they could be domesticated and got the ones that couldn’t cleaned up and
fixed. We had A LOT of cats growing up!
- lived life by his own standards! There’s a lot to back this one up but
that’s a whole other series of stories!
I know I’ve left too much out, but suffice to say he was loved and will be
greatly missed.
I don't know any of our players that didn't like Gerry, or won't miss him, and
our group will not be the same. I'm hoping the Glendale club can reopen in
a few weeks, and that we will have a heartfelt memorial game.
In the weeks that come, I will keep you updated with my communications and
any "negotiations" with the Glendale ARC.
Best wishes,
Adam Barron
Dear Glendale Bridge players,
I have learned that Marjorie Gould has passed away. Margie was for decades
a regular player in the Pasadena/Arcadia/Glendale area, rising to the rank

Dear Glendale Bridge Community,
I am saddened to inform you of the passing of Lyle Wiedeman. He was a liked
and loved frequenter of our club for many years. He will be remembered in a
memorial game when we reopen.
I am attaching his interesting obituary.
I have no news yet about our reopening, though I will work towards it. I
will keep you all posted.
Stay safe and well,

Dear Glendale Bridge family,
I am saddened to inform you of Tim Lolli's passing.
Many of us will deeply miss Tim. For years, he was our strongest player,
having more master points than almost the rest of us put together!.He
cheerfully and authoritatively answered many bridge questions and taught
classes.. As a cornerstone of our club, he played almost every day, showed
up early and helped to set up the club.
When our club eventually reopens, we will honor Tim with a memorial game.
-Adam

To: Pasadena Pomona Downey VBC <ppdvbc(a)bridgemojo.com>
I was advised by Carolyn Cohen at the beginning of today's game that her
long time friend and partner Tim Lolli had passed away. I always enjoyed
playing against Tim and Carolyn, and my sincere condolences to his friends
and family.
(Also apologies for a typo during today's game, Tim, not Tom.)
Best regards,
Mojo

generous spirit. Leon made it to the ripe age of 95, playing bridge right
up to two days before passing.*

Dear friends of the Pat Abbey Club,
I ran into Sevag Garabetian, one of the supervisors of our venu, the
Glendale Adult Recreation Center, at, of all places, a burrito shop.
It took awhile to recognize each other under our masks, but we did. He
told me that the senior center remains closed, though all of their
employees still work for Glendale. He said the center will remain closed
until there is a "cure" or, more likely, widespread vaccination.
My best guess is that means mid 2020. The ultimate decision rests with the
L.A. County Board of Supervisors, specifically when they approve Seniors
coming in for meals again.
I made my desire to return to the Center clear last April by conspicuously
leaving the coffee pot and our most important bridge supplies in the
cabinet there. Of course I have saved all our bridge boards and the dealing
machine safely at a private home. Stephen Licker and I look forward to
taking them out of mothballs on a moment's notice when the time comes.
I play weekly virtual games at both Unit 556 and Mojo's club. They are fun,
but they don't replace the camaraderie, mutual learning and friendships I
treasure at the Pat Abbey Bridge Club. I hope we can hang in there until
our club reopens. I plan to give beginner and/or intermediate classes when
we return.
Beyond our club, I hope we can play soon at the San Marino Club.
Frustratingly, they are having trouble with their venu. I look forward to
in person games at the Friendly Bridge Club and Art's. Of course the big
event of 2021 will be the opening of Mojo's Pasadena Bridge Club!
Let's stay safe and well,
-Adam
>From Dave White:
I am looking for 32 people willing to waste a Saturday with me.
On Saturday June 6th, I will be testing a method of running Swiss Teams
in BBO. I need eight teams of four, to play in this test.
For this test:
1. Teams are limited to four players. (Teams of five or six will be
allowed in real events.
2. Players will sit the same direction in all three rounds. (In the real
events, you will be able to make blind changes. But you won't get to
pick your opponents.)
3. Rounds will start at a specific time: Round one at 10am. Round two at
11:30, and Round three at 1pm. All eight players in a match must be
online at start time and not playing in any other BBO event.
4. Each rounds will be 8 boards scored on the 20 point VP scale, with
the clock set for six minutes a board. If this works we will increase
the boards to what most players can do in one hour. (Then a thirty
minute break while the director sets up the next match.)
5. Masterpoints will be club rated and come from ACBL, not BBO.
6. There will be no charge, because the whole thing could crash
horribly; I'd look like an idiot and you'd have wasted a Saturday
morning. (Besides, I currently have no way to collect money from you.)
To sign up for my little test, fill in the blanks and forward this
email to Dave White

If more than eights team apply, I will take the eight teams with the
fewest Masterpoints. As it is important we discover how easy it is for
players to learn this method of team games. So I want to use the least
experienced players I can get. I will reply with more detailed instructions.
Thanks,
Dave White
