Lots of plans and news for the Pasadena Pomona Downey virtual bridge
club.
Look at that! We had 31 visitors for my Saturday morning 9:30
mini lesson. :) It was followed by seven tables of players for
the 0-500 game.
These will continue indefinitely. I'm pursuing a series on defender
play topics for the next several weeks. This coming Saturday, July
11, will be on opening leads against trump contracts. (It
may extend to next week. We'll see.) Anyone anywhere is welcome to
join in. I'll send a Zoom invite to this list on Friday. Feel free
to pass it on to friends or family!
Traditionally I've offered beginning bridge courses through
Pasadena City College's Extension program, and they're continuing
their program this fall with online courses only. I'm planning to
put three courses on the schedule: Introduction to Bridge, Bridge -
Popular Conventions, and Bridge - Competitive Bidding. Each course
will be six weeks (six classes), and offered on Tuesday evenings at
7:15 p.m. for 90 minutes each session.
I think this will work! I don't exactly have a lesson plan for
teaching beginning bridge online yet, but I have a few weeks to
figure it out. It's that very first lesson that's my biggest
challenge.
In conjunction with the beginning bridge courses, I'm going to begin
offering a 0-20 Rookie bridge game on Wednesday evenings at
7:15. I'm going to promote this new game to my student list, and it
may or may not be for ACBL masterpoints.
I'll keep the rookie game to 12 or maybe even 8 boards, and It will
be followed by a Zoom meeting to discuss things that came up during
the game.
To make this work, I'm going to need to have on hand standby
players to fill partial tables, both for the rookie bridge
game and my Tuesday night classes that will start up in August. If
you have an interest in helping out the rookies, please let me know.
I'll be starting a separate email list to manage reservations for
the Wednesday rookie game and Tuesday evening classes.
I going to try to get this started this week. Let's see how it goes!
Since the "friend list purge" two weeks ago, Dave White has had a
challenge getting together the three District 23 limited games.
He seems to be back on track fairly well, and is planning to
continue at least the Sunday 3:15 game for 499ers. Keep in touch
with Dave, or check the District 23 web site for updates on those
games: https://www.bridgewebs.com/acbl23/
Congratulations to all the PPDVBC members who achieved new ACBL
ranks this month! The full list of rank changes for the district can
be found in the monthly Southern California Bridge News:

Finally, Roy Wilson has published a fun collection of bridge
stories. Enjoy them at http://www.bridgetales.club/
