Lots of news from the bridge world! We're
still playing and teaching a lot of bridge, but it's
all online, and we're all safe at home.
New rookie bridge game
We can't go to the physical bridge club, but we can still
play bridge with our friends and fellow students.
As part of the new online "virtual bridge club" I'm going to
be opening a game for rookie bridge players.
We'll play on Wednesday evenings at 7:15 p.m., on Bridge
Base Online (BBO), https://www.bridgebase.com.
The first game is this Wednesday!
The game format will be somewhere between 8 and 12 hands,
enough to play for no more than two hours. The hands will be
randomly shuffled — no idea what to expect!
I'm planning to have a Zoom meeting after each game so we
can celebrate victories and cry over defeats. We can talk
about what went right and what went wrong.
I expect to have many single players looking for
partnerships, and hopefully enough standby players to have
full tables.
I'm building a separate email list wed-night@bridgemojo.com
to make weekly game announcements. I'll be taking
reservations for the game.
Each session will deduct $4 from your BBO account, so you'll
want to have at least that much in the account before we
start.
Would you like to be on the email list? Just reply to this
note and say so!
Saturday morning mini lessons
Every Saturday morning at 10:00 a.m. we have a non-Life
Master (0-500) game on BBO, and last Saturday I started the
first of a 20-minute mini bridge lesson at 9:30 a.m.
I'm doing a series of topics on the subject of defender card
play. These sessions are on Zoom, they're free, and anyone
anywhere is welcome to join in.
If you're on the email list for the virtual bridge club or
the Wednesday night games, I'll be sending a Zoom invitation
on Friday before each class, and mention the topic for the
day.
Fall Bridge Basics courses through
PCC
I just (today) got approval to offer three of the popular
Bridge Basics courses online through PCC Extension.
All of the courses will be on Tuesday evenings, starting
August 25.
The three courses will be Introduction to Bridge, Popular
Conventions, and Competitive Bidding.
I've been practicing offering these topics online using Zoom
and Bridge Base Online, and finding that some things are
actually easier to explain online than at a physical card
table. I'm not sure how that very first class is going to
work yet, but I have a few weeks to work on it!
Nothing is available yet for enrollment. They're just
putting together the catalog now. As soon as things are
ready I'll drop another note here. I'll also update the web
site with lots of class information.
I'm thinking that the Tuesday evening classes will work very
nicely with the Wednesday evening bridge games. We should
have more, and easier, ways to get together, practice, and
play this great game!
Final note: No! I haven't yet had a haircut. I should really
make a new head shot, no?
Best regards,
Mojo
